LIFE SHOW tells the story of Lai Shuang Yang (Tao Hong), a shrewd,
capable business woman with an enigmatic smile and cool exterior.
Shuang Yang runs her small Ji Qing Street restaurant, while also keeping
her nephew safe, her bother from drug addiction and, most importantly,
trying to regain possession of the family home, which was lost during
the Cultural Revolution. In fact, Shuang Yang will stop at nothing
to retake the family estate - even marrying off her restaurant helper,
A Mei, to the Housing Bureau officer's son. But for whom does she
struggle and for what happiness? Shuang Yang has found she is unable
to share her life with a mate, her sibling, her father, and children
of her own. After Shuang Yang tackles each of the difficulties confronting
her, what of her will be left for happiness? Winner of the Grand Prize
at the 2002 Shanghai International Film Festival, including Best Actress
for Tao Hong and Best Cinematography by Sun Ming, LIFE SHOW encapsulates
the hardships of the modern Chinese woman.
