This film was adapted from a short story by Lu Xun, a great writer
of contemporary Chinese literature.
Juansheng, a progressive young man who is dissatisfied with society,
works at the Bureau of Education. Despite the scorn of neighbors and
peers, he and Zijun defy social norms by living together as though
they were married. Difficult as their life is, they are happy. Soon,
however, the pressures of their living situation and differences in
ideology and character between them cast a shadow over their household.
Juanzheng's dismissal from the Bureau of Education exacerbates their
problems. Under the harsh light of life's realities, they separate.
Zijun returns to her feudalistic family broken-hearted, and she eventually
dies in this stern and hostile environment.
Juansheng, in his bottomless regret and sorrow, is disconsolate and
blames himself for their separation and Zijun's death. Yet, after
grieving for the past, Juansheng decides he must bury his sorrow in
the bottom of his heart and start off toward a new life.
