The story takes place in a sacred Buddhist spot-Wutai Mountain, Shanxi
Province-during theQing Dynasty.
Emperor Kangxi fathers a bastard son named Long'er by village girl
Meizhen when he inspects Wutai Mountain. Furious, Qu Fengwu, Meizhen's
lover, mutilates Long'er's testicle.
Long'er becomes a monk and changes his name into yuankong. Some 20
years later he is granted the title, honored monk, by Kangxi. So he
becomes a powerful person among the Buddhists around Wutai Mountain.
Meanwhile, a mysterious monster, the "Black Dragon", appears
in the area. He always appears on wedding nights, violates birdes
and cuts off grooms' testicles.
Emperor Yongzheng, Kangxi's successor, appoints Sima Zhen as an imperial
minister to
investigate the case. With the assistance of Qu Fengwu, a KungFu hero,
and through many dangerous situations, Sima Zhen finally finds out
that the "Black Dragon" is none other than the crazed Yuankong.
Chased by government soldiers, Yuankong jumps off a cliff. His mother,
Meizhen, also commits suicide in despair. Meritorious minister Sima
Zhen is killed by poisonous wine bestowed by Emperor Yongzheng. Qu
engwu, who deeply loves Meizhen, leaves his family and becomes a monk.
